This is the beginning level course in coding and robotics and is a prerequisite for Intermediate Coding and Robotics. Students will develop critical thinking skills to employ technology to problem solving. This course focuses on developing programming/coding skills. Students will also gain knowledge of the use of technology and consequences of its’ application.
Hands-on activities employ the Sphero Bolt robotic device for students to learn to programmatically command movement, sound, and illumination. Students will program the device using block-based programming applications on a tablet computer. This course will help students develop baseline block-based coding skills and logical thinking to help ensure success in the Exploration of Robotics Technology course.
Students will be introduced to computer technology basics and learning the fundamentals of programming or coding in a "block-based" environment. The primary programming language will be the Scratch block-based software developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Later in the course, students will also learn to control their devices using Javascript.
Upon completion of the main body of coursework, it is expected that students will be able to obtain industry certification for ICT Computing Essentials (PROSO807)
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be prepared to continue their coding education by enrolling in Intermediate Coding and Robotics, an intermediate level coding course that makes use of the Lego MindStorms devices.
